2014 Call For Scores

*Congratulations to Russell Steinberg, our 2014 winner. Please stay tuned for information about our 2017 competition.*

illumine is pleased to announce our very first Call For Scores composition competition, open to all composers of any age. As there are very few works written for violin, mezzo-soprano, and piano all together, this competition will serve both to expand our repertoire and to champion the works of living composers.

Winning compositions will be performed on our Celebration of Living Composers concerts on July 11th and 12th, 2014, both at 8:00PM. The number of winners selected will be determined by the durations of the winning compositions. The first place winner will be awarded a cash prize equivalent to the total amount of all application fees combined. In the event of a tie or a close second place, the prize will be divided accordingly.

Compositions will be adjudicated on a basis of craftsmanship, orchestration, and score/part preparation. A composer’s availability to attend both performances will partially influence our decision, as we wish for all winning composers to introduce their pieces. Special arrangements will be made for winning composers living outside of the Greater Philadelphia Area. All applicants will be notified of the results as soon as possible.

Competition Guidelines

•Works must be scored for violin, mezzo-soprano, and piano. No fewer and no more instruments/voices may be used. The use of electronics is permitted as long as the composer is able to provide all necessary equipment to both performances.

•Works must be at least three minutes long. There is no upper limit to the duration.

•Any text may be used, including the use of neutral syllables.

Kaitlyn’s tessitura, A3 to A5, must be observed.

•More than one piece may be submitted, however, only one piece per composer may be selected.
